Your God is Too Small

by Michael Hagan ∞ with Monica Kemp

When I was a teenager, our pastor led our youth group in reading and discussing a book by that title. Everyone at some point in their life has been tempted by a false god: success, wealth, popularity, or power. Many dedicate their lives to one or more. It’s easy to be seduced into worshiping the idols of business, politics, or pop culture. Some of them even have their own TV shows, podcasts, TikTok or YouTube sites, attracting millions of followers.

We each decide what we want out of life and may discover something we do well. We decide what is of the highest value to us and make life decisions based on those conclusions. Some of us can merge our values with our careers. But we all end up worshipping someone or something.

Worship… what does that really mean? Does it require spreading out prostrate on the ground? Spending all we must to acquire a goal? Dedicating our lives to something or someone? There are many synonyms for worship; admiration, adulation, dedication, veneration… Each entails a deep wish to mirror or to seek someone or something bigger than us, reach for some high goal which compels us to risk all for its attainment. Or is it just yourself and your immediate goals you worship?

What is the meaning of life? I know, that’s not a very original question. Perhaps it’s something you might be willing to die for. News flash!! You are going to die! What’s unique about you is what you decide is worth living for.  You chose nothing? How sad.

We’re entering the deep end of the pool now. How long can you tread water? Suddenly there’s no footing… time to sink or swim. Did I make you feel uncomfortable yet? If not, well, at least I tried. If so, my job is done. Have I posed an existential question that makes you squirm? Good news! That means you’re swimming, not sinking! It may only be the dog paddle, but t’s a start. You’re on your way.

I’ve made my choice. I’m living forever! No, really, that’s an honest-to-God option. Honest to God? Interesting choice of words. It means I’ve joined hands with the vast spiritual family that pervades this beleaguered planet just beyond our vision. I’ve never seen God, but know him in my heart. God is an integral part of my life. This planet is the proving ground from which we are all invited to transition into a new reality, begin an eternal spiritual life in a loving universe. You aren’t required to choose it; it’s an absolutely free-will option, there for all.  I’ve made my choice.

I’ve chosen to worship a God as huge as the universe!
