René Descartes established a new era for Western philosophy when he wrote, “I think; therefore, I am.” I am able to think; therefore, I exist. Man, unlike animals, is self-aware. It is humankind’s ability to think that sets us apart from the animal heritage from which we sprang. But to completely leave the animal in us behind, we need a higher goal than the creation of tools.
Thinking is only the first step toward truly transcending our animal nature. What we do with these brains is the real challenge. Humans have transformed the world in a relatively short time, considering that life has existed on Earth for hundreds of millions of years. The first modern humans, cave dwellers, appeared a mere million years ago.
When they learned how to build a fire, it was a tremendous technological breakthrough. No animal had ever done that. Now we are able to use fire to launch space probes and power the world. Sadly, we also use our brains to create increasingly destructive weapons of war and for self-aggrandizement through power and wealth. A brain is as good as what it’s used for.
Only love is real. God is love. Love alone can forever move us beyond the level of animals, clawing for the survival of the most powerful and the wealthiest. The material inventions of mind create only illusions of temporary wealth, good for a few short years on this planet. They have no future, no currency in a universe based on love.
Wealth accumulation of any kind requires planning ahead. The only real question for a mature being is; how far ahead are you thinking? What kind of wealth are you busy building?
Our current contract with material reality provides us with this limited assurance; in all likelihood, we might spend sixty-plus years on earth. If that is the extent of our vision or our goal, material wealth may suffice. Spiritual thinking demands that we plan for eternity, invest in an infinite future.
Jesus implored us to build up our treasure in heaven. Our mind is instrumental in this accumulation of spiritual wealth, uniting us with our indwelling Father fragment to use decisions to build a soul. After we leave this planet that soul is the core of our new universe identity. The richest souls will be those who have persistently used mind/soul to love and serve their fellows, to love and carry out our Father’s will in a loving universe. Paraphrasing Descartes; I love God and his children; therefore,
I am eternity bound.
