Week 4: "Our Mother God: Knowing Her, Loving Her, Sharing Her"
Chuck Thurston has been studying the Mother God relationship for several years and stresses that deepening our understanding and relationship with the Mother does not replace the Universal Father. Rather, knowing and sharing our knowledge of the Mother Spirit adds to our spiritual experience.
“The Mother Spirit pervades all things. It’s like when you get up in the morning and you're just standing up for the first time in the day. You can feel the ground under your feet and feel her presence through your feet and feel that she is supporting you. A “felt relationship” with the Mother Spirit is a physical sensation like touch. When we communicate affection through touch, that's real. Through this form of nonverbal communication, we can connect with the Mother Spirit. We can express affection for her and love for her by the way we interact with physical things, and we receive that kind of support from her in the same way.
In Jesus’ second discourse on religion, he says that your faith must dominate all three levels of body, mind, and spirit (155:6). So we can have a faith relationship with deity even through our physical nature, as well as through our mind and spirit. When Jesus prayed so fervently in the Garden of Gethsemane, a mighty angel came and touched him. This gave Jesus much comfort to face his challenges.”
Interview Excerpts
What is one way in which The Urantia Book talks about the Mother God concept?
You can find some examples of Mother Deity in some of the Hindu teachings and other religions. The Catholics lift up Mary to a position of worshipful prominence. So Mother Deity is not unique to The Urantia Book. But The Urantia Book really gives us a lot to work with in terms of understanding and appreciating at least that complemental dynamic—not sameness with Father Deity, but of equal significance.
And I think the key to all of this is the idea of complemental synergy. There are a couple of mentions in The Urantia Book about super-additive outcomes. When you have two contributing creative forces that are complementary, then you get outcomes that are unprecedented. There's a truly creative potential in super-additive synergy.
Michael and the Mother Spirit are complementary. When they work together, they produce super-additive outcomes. And I think that's part of the reason why this concept is so important and should be understood by everybody clearly.
Will you talk about the “felt relationship” we can have with our Universe Mother Spirit?
